Get a Financial Life

Back in 2005, I took a family finance class, and one of the required books for the class was Beth Kobliner's book Get a Financial Life. I enjoyed it, but since it was required reading, (and I was still living the good life as a dependent on my parents) I didn't quite appreciate its value. 5 years later, I picked it up again, this time as a wife, mother, and homemaker. I must say this book is fantastic for explaining financial items. It's written in plain English, not like a textbook. It is very easy to read and understand. I have been reading the 2000 edition, but I think she published a new edition last year (This is the one pictured on the left, I think.) She teaches how to reduce debt, save, and even invest. She also talks about the different insurances out there as well. I highly recommend it.

Broken Things To Mend

I have grown to love the words of Jeffrey R Holland. I love this book. It has given me a lot to think about in my struggles to come back to activity. It also helped me through some dark days in the hospital. I have been looking more and more for books by General Authorities. I crave the words of the Lord.

Joseph Smith : Rough Stone Rolling

This is my most recent read, so I thought I would start with it.  Richard Bushman is THE expert on Joseph Smith.  You can read more about him here.  He is one of the editors of the Joseph Smith Papers.  This book gave me a realistic picture of the prophet's life.  It showed me that Joseph was a man as well as a prophet.  I feel like I know Joseph much better after this read.  This book may be a bit different that other books you have read about Joseph Smith because it presents the history warts and all.  I personally like his approach because it presents the history as it happened and doesn't smooth over any rough parts.  I came away from this book with a sense that Heavenly Father can take an ordinary boy and turn him into something great.  Joseph was a good man, a decent man, and an honest man, as well as the prophet of the latter-days.
